LBW 229, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God”
Devotion
This morning, most of us will sing Martin Luther’s classic hymn as we celebrate our Reformation heritage. Luther’s interpretation of Psalm 46 resonates with our deepest understanding of the radical truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We recognize the powers of this world swirl around us, threatening to devour us. We acknowledge the truth that we cannot save ourselves from that fate.
Today, as everyday, we stare into the face of this truth and proclaim that we have been redeemed from all powers. Our God is a mighty fortress, refuge and strength in times of trouble – even when faced with the loss of goods, honor, spouse or life. One little word subdues all our foes.
So today, we celebrate our Reformation past and future. The world still needs the stronghold of God. Our lives are hid in the fortress of Christ, who sends us forth to proclaim the good news.
Prayer
Lord God, you are our only refuge and strength. We praise you for those who came before us, and ask for the will to boldly proclaim the gospel. Amen.
