1 John 3:1-3 (NRSV)
Read 1 John 3:1-3 on biblegateway.com
Chapter 3See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Verse 2Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. Verse 3And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
Devotion
The promises held out to us by the Lord give us strength and courage for today’s trials.
"We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete" (1 John 1:4). "See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God" (1 John 3:1). What more could we want? As children of God, we are heirs to God's kingdom. Although the world is blind to this inheritance, our calling is to proclaim Christ’s message so everyone will know God's love and become children of God.
We would like to know more about our inheritance, but we could not comprehend its great wonder. What we are told is sufficient: "We will be like him, for we will see him as he is." In the meantime, the Spirit calls each of us to pray daily: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me" (Psalm 51:10).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, prepare us for the day when we will see you face to face. Amen.
