Lord, You Give the Great Commission, ELW 579 & WOV 756
Devotion
“Lord, you make the common holy,” we sing in verse three. Isn’t that what God is all about …taking ordinary things; things like water and wine, bread and dirt, a tree and a stable and turning them into the very means by which we encounter God’s great mystery?
How many other ordinary, everyday things become vehicles for God’s mercy? So many more than we can imagine: the hug of a child, fresh rain on thirsty farmland, the ink on a peace treaty between longtime enemies, a bowl of hot soup in the belly of a homeless person.
As this verse closes we sing of what we are to do with these ordinary God-bearing things: use them to “daily lift life heavenward,” by recognizing that at any moment we just might have a run-in with our Lord. Amazing. Just like God.
Prayer
God of wonder and mystery, open my eyes to your presence in my ordinary world today. Amen.
