Verse 1Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth
Verse 2before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh. Stir up your might, and come to save us!
Verse 3Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
Verse 4O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people's prayers?
Verse 5You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in full measure.
Verse 6You make us the scorn of our neighbors; our enemies laugh among themselves.
Verse 7Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
Verse 8You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.
Verse 9You cleared the ground for it; it took deep root and filled the land.
Verse 10The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches;
Verse 11it sent out its branches to the sea, and its shoots to the River.
Verse 12Why then have you broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?
Verse 13The boar from the forest ravages it, and all that move in the field feed on it.
Verse 14Turn again, O God of hosts; look down from heaven, and see; have regard for this vine,
Verse 15the stock that your right hand planted.
Verse 16They have burned it with fire, they have cut it down; may they perish at the rebuke of your countenance.
Verse 17But let your hand be upon the one at your right hand, the one whom you made strong for yourself.
Verse 18Then we will never turn back from you; give us life, and we will call on your name.
Verse 19Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
Devotion
Does God cause suffering? Is God in control of all that happens to us? Even God’s chosen people, as reflected in this Psalm, have been fed the “bread of tears” (v. 5) and become the “scorn of their neighbors” (v. 6). The psalmist cannot find God’s face shining in the midst of the dark threat of Israel’s enemies. But the psalmist is bold in challenging God to nourish the vine God brought out of Egypt. The psalmist beseeches God to save the people again, that Israel may live once more with the bold proclamation that should God come, Israel will never turn back from God. May we be this bold! We cry to God to restore us and believe God will indeed do so.
Prayer
Steadfast God, we give you thanks that even in the midst of suffering, this season reminds us you have come to us in Jesus and continue to come to us each day. Amen.
