O Master, Let Me Walk with You, LBW 492 & ELW 818
1 O Master, let me walk with you
in lowly paths of service true;
tell me your secret; help me bear
the strain of toil, the fret of care.
2 Help me the slow of heart to move
by some clear, winning word of love;
teach me the way ward feet to stay,
and guide them in the homeward stay.
3 Teach me your patience; share with me
a closer, dearer company,
in work that keeps faith sweet and strong,
in trust that triumphs over wrong.
4 In hope that sends a shining ray
far down the future’s broad’ning way,
in peace that only you can give;
with you, O Master, let me live.
Devotion
What is it like to live fully trusting God? O Master, Let Me Walk with You summarizes the themes of trust in God found throughout this week’s texts. The hymn reminds us we can question God’s “secrets.” With patience, we can seek answers and gain hope for our future deliverance. It acknowledges trust in God relieves our “fret of care.” As we trust in God, God entrusts us to share the Gospel’s “word of love” and salvation with everyone. Trust and faith in God bring us into company with God and with our sisters and brothers in Christ. Together, through obedience, we can triumph over wrongs, such as disease, poverty and injustice.
How will our lives appear if we fully trust God? Trusting our Master, we will exemplify humble lives walked in “lowly paths of service true” and radiating “peace that only [God] can give.” What more could we ever desire?
Prayer
O Master, we praise and thank you for the incomparable blessing of walking with you. Through your grace, grow our trust and faith in you so that we live lives of humble service that share the Gospel, right wrongs, and radiate peace. Amen.
