He Leadeth Me, LBW 501
1 He leadeth me: oh, blessed thought!
Oh, words with heav'nly comfort fraught!
Whate'er I do, where'er I be,
Still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me.
He leadeth me, he leadeth me,
By his own hand he leadesth me.
His faithful foll'wer I would be,
For by his hand he leadeth me.
2 Sometimes mid scenes of deepest gloom,
Sometimes where Eden's bowers bloom,
By waters calm, o'er troubled sea,
Still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me.
Refrain
3 Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine,
Nor ever murmur nor repine;
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since 'tis my God that leadeth me.
Refrain
4 And when my task on earth is done,
When by thy grace vict'ry's won,
E'en death's cold wave I will not flee,
Since God through Jordan leadeth me.
Refrain
Devotion
This hymn was written by Joseph Gilmore and is based on Psalm 23. It is helpful to realize that God’s leadership is the one significant fact in human experience, that it makes no difference how we are led, or whither we are, so long as we are sure God is leading us.
Now the third and fourth verses say:
Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine,
Nor ever murmur nor repine;
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since 'tis my God that leadeth me.
And when my task on earth is done,
When by thy grace vict'ry's won,
E'en death's cold wave I will not flee,
Since God through Jordan leadeth me.
Have the certainty that we are doing the right thing in front of God. Give us the security to walk in confidence because He goes not only in front, but beside us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father: Thank you for being my Shepherd, my leader, my Father who cares for me. You really are the only way we can walk in confidence. Amen.
