My Life Flows On in Endless Song (ELW 763)
Devotion
1 My life flows on in endless song;
above earth's lamentation,
I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn
that hails a new creation.
Refrain
No storm can shake my inmost calm
while to that Rock I'm clinging.
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
how can I keep from singing?
2 Through all the tumult and the strife,
I hear that music ringing.
It finds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing? Refrain
3 What though my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Savior liveth.
What though the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth. Refrain
4 The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
a fountain ever springing!
All things are mine since I am his!
How can I keep from singing? Refrain
Text: Robert Lowry, 1826-1899
It can be sobering to reflect on the challenges facing our planet and to recognize that our efforts, strong though they may be, seem so small by comparison. But we know that Christ brings new life! We proclaim that Christ is making all things new!
As storms strengthen and temperatures increase, as glaciers melt and sea levels rise, God is still at work. God is speaking and acting through our work and vocations, creating and renewing, again and again. May our hearts not be troubled by thoughts of "vanity" or inadequacy. Let us sing out, committing ourselves to Christian service. Though our efforts may last just a short while, we give thanks that the Spirit that emboldens us is indeed "a fountain ever springing!"
Prayer
Lord Jesus, our lives are short and our challenges are many. Give us the strength we need to serve, and keep us ever mindful that our brief song is part of your unending story! Amen.
