O God of Love, O King of Peace (Evangelical Lutheran Worship 749)
1 O God of love, O King of peace,
make wars throughout the world to cease;
our greed and sinful wrath restrain.
Give peace, O God, give peace again.
2 Remember, Lord, your works of old,
the wonders that our elders told;
remember not our sins’ deep stain.
Give peace, O God, give peace again.
3 Whom shall we trust but you, O Lord?
Where rest but on your faithful word?
None ever called on you in vain.
Give peace, O God, give peace again.
4 Where saints and angels dwell above
all hearts are knit in holy love;
oh, bind us in that heav’nly chain.
Give peace, O God, give peace again.

Devotion
“Give peace, O God, give peace again.” Seven short words of prayer that form the refrain of this hymn. Those words are also a refrain of lament and hope from our hearts. It is a plea to God, acknowledging that peace is missing and is needed to make things whole again.
In Hebrew, the word for “peace” is shalom. Shalom has a very layered meaning which doesn’t translate well. It conveys a sense of wholeness, completeness, and balance. Shalom is like a wellness wheel; that all is well with you—spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically in every relationship. When Jesus says, “Peace be with you,” he essentially means this: May you be at peace with yourself. May you be at peace in your relationships with God and your neighbors. May you be at peace in your work for justice and equity for all people. May your whole being be at peace.
Prayer
God of unity, give us peace again. Amidst all our divisions, join us together in your holy love and make us whole. We pray for your shalom, Lord; give us peace again. Amen.
