“Great is Thy Faithfulness,” ELW 733 & WOV 771
1 Great is thy faithfulness,
O God my Father; there is no shadow of turning with thee; thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not; as thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.
Refrain
Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed thy hand hath provided; great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.
2 Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, sun moon, and stars in their courses above join with all nature in manifold witness to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.
Refrain
3 Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Refrain
Devotion
I sang “My Faith Looks Up to Thee” as a youngster thinking it was my faith that worked wonders, my faith that made the difference in my relationship to God, my faith upon which my relationship with Jesus depended. I also sang “Great is Thy Faithfulness” and was convinced the text was a mistake. It couldn’t be “Thy” faithfulness to me; it had to be “my” faithfulness to Thee. I substituted what I thought “should” be the words. It did not make sense until I reached a point in my life when I questioned my faith, my strength, my ability to be faithful.
Have you ever questioned your faith, your strength, your ability to be faithful? Sing those words again and again and hear the message of God’s faithfulness, God’s work, God keeping God’s promises each day, each season of the year and each season of our lives.
Prayer
Merciful Lord, let me sing into the gratefulness for your “pardon for sin and peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with 10,000 beside.” Amen.
