Jesus Loves Me! (ELW 595)
1 Jesus loves me! this I know,
for the Bible tells me so;
little ones to him belong,
they are weak, but he is strong.
Refrain:
Yes, Jesus loves me,
yes, Jesus loves me,
yes, Jesus loves me,
the Bible tells me so.
2 Jesus loves me! he who died
heaven’s gates to open wide;
he will wash away my sin,
let his little child come in. [Refrain]
3 Jesus loves me! he will stay
close beside me all the way;
when at last I come to die,
he will take me home on high. [Refrain]
Devotion
Jesus Loves Me this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong, they are weak (arms hang limp) but He is Strong (double fist pumps).
Aiti, my Finnish grandma, and I would sit together on her piano bench, where she taught me Bible songs. Now I sing them to my granddaughter.
Embedded in this song’s simplicity is an offensive truth—we are weak! Just goes to show what a good melody can get us to admit.
Yet, this leads us to the very place where we will know the strength of Jesus Christ for us. We sing the enduring good news of these three words, whatever our condition or circumstances, “Jesus Loves Me.” We can sign both truths with vigor.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I gladly acknowledge I am weak, for there I glory in your strength. May your love be sung anew to each generation. Amen.
