We Come to the Hungry Feast (ELW 479, Verse 1)
1 We come to the hungry feast
hungry for a word of peace.
To hungry hearts unsatisfied
the love of God is not denied.
We come, we come to the hungry feast.
Devotion
On Wednesday of this week, we focused on the words from the 4th chapter of Ephesians reminding us of the varieties of gifts within the body of Christ. The writer says, “The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors, and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.”
As I listen to the words of this hymn, “We Come to the Hungry Feast,” I give thanks for the talents of a brother in Christ, Ray Makeever. Over the years I have known him as a fellow student, a poet and lyricist, a guitar player and soloist, a director of music, and the author of this hymn.
During the long-accumulated days of the pandemic, we have waited for the hungry feast, hungry for the fellowship of the body of Christ. We hunger to make an impact in a world of hunger.
Prayer
Generous, abundant God, we hunger for you. Provide us with all we need and push us to provide for others. Amen.
