We Come to the Hungry Feast (ELW 479, Verses 2 and 3)
2 We come to the hungry feast
hungry for a world released
from hungry folk of ev’ry kind,
the poor in body, poor in mind.
We come, we come to the hungry feast.
3 We come to the hungry feast
hungry that the hunger cease,
and knowing, though we eat our fill,
the hunger will stay with us;
still we come, we come to the hungry feast.
Devotion
In a familiar story from the Gospel of Mark, Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
I have seen God’s ministry advanced by people who have shared generously of what they were given. At the same time, I have also seen touching examples of people who had very little but gave very generously in many different ways. Perhaps the most humbling time of my life was when I was part of a mission trip in a poor community within Mexico. Hoping to make some impact in the lives of poor people, we instead were touched by their generosity to us.
Prayer
Loving God, we are all hungry. Teach us that those who are in need also have much to give so that we may learn and grow as we share with each other. Amen.
