Congregation Description:The Phillips neighborhood we serve is the most diverse, and youngest demographically in Minneapolis, and the second poorest. It is the center of the rapidly growing Latino community, and also has a large Somali, Native American, African-American and white presence. It is home to major institutions (3 hospitals for example) and arts and culture groups. English worship is at 10:00 am, Sunday school and adult forum at 11:15, Spanish worship at 12:00 pm. There are a number of bible studies, and a monthly Community Night, which includes food, fellowship and teaching. Other strategies include a job and leadership training program for youth and outreach targetted to youth and Latino families. We partner with in the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater, Waite House Community Center, Immigrant Rights Groups, Andersen Elementary and the 15th Ave Block Club. We support missionaries in Guatemala and Peru. Our major challenges include building unity as we become a more diverse, fully bilingual congregation, and reaching different segments of our neighborhood, while celebrating our 124 years of tradition. A major strategy of ours is to use the arts to reach and inspire people in the community. Our "Semilla" arts program has completed 15 murals in the neighborhood, and taught mosaics to over 700 people.

Autobiography:I was raised Roman Catholic in a working class family in Austin, MN, and became an athiest in high school. While attending an urban studies semester in Chicago through St. Olaf College, I underwent a conversion experience and returned to faith. My senior year I interned with Mark Hanson--now the Presiding Bishop--at his first parish in north Minneapolis. After working in church camps, as a cook and in human rights work, I attended Christ-Seminary Seminex, interned in the south Bronx, and was ordained in 1985. I served three ministries in the south Bronx, and then planted a bilingual church in Philadelphia, where we served for 12 years. My wife is also ordained and we serve as co-pastor at St Paul's and coordinators of the synod's Latino strategy. I am also a poet and fiction writer, and have studied intensely in those fields, as well as their connection to ministry. I currently am active with the local elementary school community team, an anti-crime network and immigrant rights groups. My wife and I have two adopted daughters.
