LBW 549 "Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven"
Devotion
A four-year-old girl was baptized on September 29, this feast day of angels and of Michael, the great archangelic herald of cosmic conclusion. Having learned about the day she said, “Today, me be baptized. Me get wings. Me be angel.”
Henry Lyte’s beautiful hymn text, Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven, draws us into this joy of God’s grace and places us firmly in the company of the angels. We are "ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven" (verse 1) as children of a loving God who "tenderly ... shields and spares us" (verse 3). And, in verse 4, we invite the angels, sun, moon and everything in all the cosmos into one glorious proclamation: "Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace."
