WOV #699, "Blessed Assurance"
Devotion
Fanny Crosby lived in New York City during the nineteenth century. She was taught from an early age that faith in God will carry you through all things. Her childhood love of poetry led her to write songs about God's love. As an adult, she lived and worked in rescue missions in the slums of Manhattan, reaching out to the poor and downtrodden. Her songs offered hope to those whose lives were hopeless.
Crosby was blind from infancy -- improper medical treatment took her sight when she was just six weeks old. But she lived as someone who had a clear vision of what life with God could be like. The words of her songs speak of the beauty of heaven and the sight of God's merciful face. And they speak of the quiet confidence that comes with trusting that God is with you wherever you go, and claiming God's promises as your own.
As you read (or sing!) this hymn, ask yourself: In what ways does God reassure me? And, what difference does that make in my life?
Prayer
Precious Jesus, assure us of your constant presence and care. Help us claim your place in our story and to praise you, our savior, all the day long. Amen.
