LBW #355, "Through the Night of Doubt and Sorrow"
Devotion
Onward, therefore, sisters, brothers; Onward with the cross our aid.
Bear its shame, and fight its battle till we rest beneath its shade.
Soon shall come the great awak’ning; Soon the rending of the tomb!
Then the scatt’ring of all shadows, and the end of toil and gloom. (v.4)
Is there anything more audacious than to stand at the site of an open grave, where an internment service is about to happen, and sing The Doxology? “Praise God from whom all blessings flow…” the mourners belted out together against a crisp, nippy wind in late October. Right there, in the teeth of death’s own place. But the doxology expressed the sharper teeth of the faith those confident mourners had. The “rending of the tomb,” indeed!
Prayer
O gracious God, great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed thy hand hath provided; great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me. Amen.
Prayer is the refrain from WOV #771, "Great Is Thy Faithfulness"
