LBW #518, “Beautiful Savior”
Devotion
Beautiful Savior, King of Creation,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I’d love thee, Truly I’d serve thee,
Light of my soul, my joy, my crown. (v.1)
Driving to Amarillo, I saw the sign: “Jesus is Lord over Waxahachie.”
The sign spoke the truth. But the sign’s presence did not make it true. And even people deciding to put up the sign (maybe a local referendum?) didn’t make it true. Some people like to profess: “Jesus is my personal Lord and Savior.” That’s good, but does saying it make it so?
The Lordship of Jesus is about God, not us. “Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name…” (Philippians 2:9). It’s salutary to believe that truth. But the hope of all creation is that it’s true even when it’s not believed.
Prayer
Jesus, you are King of kings and Lord of lords. Hold all of creation in your loving embrace until that day when every knee will bow and tongue confess that you are Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.
