LBW #32, “Fling Wide the Door”
Devotion
The word “fling” is a powerful word. It speaks of dramatic and energetic action. It suggests the action of throwing open a great door of welcome. What a way for us to think of this season, our lives and our churches. These are days in which to fling wide our doors to welcome Jesus, but also to welcome one another and the stranger.
This hymn invites us to get excited about the days ahead. What fun it is to welcome guests to our home. How exciting it is and how filled with opportunity it is to welcome guests to our churches. Some of those guests can be strangers; perhaps even those who have not felt welcome before. May we fling wide our doors.
There is also a door to our hearts. Let us fling open those doors to welcome the King of glory.
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, you know there are many doors in our lives. Help us to make sure those doors are open to guests, to those who stand outside in the cold and to you, for you came among us as a stranger without welcome. Lead us to fling wide our doors.
